ASU course on Latinx children, youth, and families coming Fall 2023!
Dr. José Causadias will teach a class on Latinx children, youth, and families (CDE 598/498) in Fall 2023!
In this class, students will…
Develop basic literacy on issues related to Latinx children, youth, and families. This includes basic concepts, such as who are Latinx children, youth, and families, what are some challenges and opportunities they currently face, and what are some central aspects of their cultural, ethnic, and racial capital. Latinx children, youth, and families literacy is not about memorizing definitions, but about active learning, critical thinking, and civic engagement. Latinx children, youth, and families literacy refers to awareness of power dynamics, developing skills and knowledge, understanding their history, how it intersects with multiple systems of oppression in the U.S., and how they enact change through collective action.
Strengthen your critical consciousness. This involves developing complex perspectives, emotions, and actions toward issues related to Latinx children, youth, and families. Critical consciousness includes the capacity to identify social inequities and attribute their cause to structural factors (critical reflection), the belief in our ability to make social changes (political efficacy), and participation in actions that challenge how society functions (critical action). This class invites students to reflect on their own experiences and question their social position in a stratified society. Instead of blaming our current problems on a few “bad apples”, this class aims at fostering the development of a critical consciousness of the role we all play in reproducing and perpetuating these systems of oppression.
This is an excellent opportunity to learn about how contexts shape development, particularly of minoritized populations, and challenge yourself to think critically about your experiences, attributions, and contributions to society. Sign up today!
